Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee talks about the band’s new album Sanctuary. She shares how they made it and what inspired the music. In an interview with KOMP 92.3 Lee says making Sanctuary was an tough journey. The band had been working on songs for a while. Things got intense over the past year.
“It’s been like a push to keep going ” she says. She emphasizes that they did it because they wanted to make music not because they had to.
Music as a Safe Space
For Lee music is personal. It’s a place where the band and fans can come together and feel understood.
She says making and listening to music helps people connect on a level. It’s a way for people to express themselves and feel better. That’s what the album’s title, Sanctuary is about. It’s about the safe space music can provide.
The World We Live In
Lee doesn’t avoid talking about the state of the world. She says it’s chaotic and overwhelming and many people are struggling.
She thinks it’s her job as an artist to deal with those feelings and turn them into music. She wants to offer something not just reflect the darkness.
She talks about wanting to share the truth through her work. She wants to give listeners hope and direction when they’re feeling lost.
“I Believe in Us”
Even though the album deals with themes Lee says she’s still hopeful.
“I really am still an optimist. I believe in us ” she says. She thinks people can find a way forward in tough times.
That mix of darkness and hope has always been part of Evanescence’s music. It’s still there in Sanctuary.
Looking Ahead
Sanctuary comes out on June 5. The album is both a continuation of Evanescence’s sound and a reflection of the world, around them.
For Lee the goal is the same: make something connect with people and offer strength through music.
