Better Without You is the seventh track from Evanescence’s fifth studio album, The Bitter Truth. The song title first appeared in August 2020 when producer Nick Raskulinecz posted an Instagram photo of Will Hunt’s snare drum with the titles “Better Without You” and “Take Cover” written on it. The track was later released on March 5, 2021 as the fifth and final single ahead of the album’s release.
Instead of sharing a traditional 30-second preview, the band introduced the song through a puzzle for fans to solve. Those who completed the puzzle were entered for a chance to be the first fan in the world to hear the song during a private Q&A with Amy Lee. Everyone who solved the puzzle also received a free ringtone via email.
Amy Lee explained that the song is about overcoming obstacles and refusing to be held back, saying it represents “refusing to be held down and making my own way.” Many fans interpreted the wind-up toy sound used at the beginning and throughout the track as a reference to the band’s former record label, Wind-Up Records, which had been criticized for restricting Lee’s creative control.
In an Instagram post, Lee described the meaning of the song in more detail. She explained that it reflects her personal journey and the challenges she faced while building her career and maintaining control of her music. Each verse represents a different obstacle from her past through the present. Some of those experiences relate to the music industry, while others are more personal. Lee said the song is meant to empower listeners who have been made to feel powerless and encouraged people not to let negative voices define their identity or stop them from being who they are meant to be.
During her Kerrang! cover story interview in March 2021, Lee said the song touches on elements of her past that she has largely moved on from, but that there were still things she needed to express. She explained that the song was difficult to describe because some of its meaning is very personal and she did not want to reopen old conflicts. According to Lee, the lyrics address various obstacles she encountered throughout her career and life, but she intentionally avoids calling out specific people.
The line “we’re fallen” in the bridge is an intentional reference to the band’s debut album, Fallen. The first verse reflects the internal struggles between Amy Lee and former band member Ben Moody during the Fallen era, which eventually led to Moody leaving the band during a European tour. The third verse addresses broader themes such as political oppression, corrupt leadership, and the global fight for democracy.
In a May 2021 interview with Loudwire, Lee further explained that each verse of the song is dedicated to a different person or entity from different stages of her life. The verses progress chronologically, beginning with earlier struggles for independence, moving through experiences within the music industry, and ending with themes related to the present day and the wider world. Lee noted that although the song touches on issues within the music industry, it is not solely about her former label. Instead, it reflects a larger journey involving personal growth, artistic independence, and overcoming the pressures surrounding her career.
Lee also recalled recording the final lines of the song, including the bridge, on the day the 2020 U.S. presidential election was called for Joe Biden. While she noted that the song itself is not meant to be political, she said the moment added emotional weight to the lyrics, particularly the feeling of closure expressed in the line “It’s over. It’s over now.”
On May 12, 2021, Evanescence released a live performance video of “Better Without You” on YouTube.
